   1 How to use the University of Michigan X.500 Email Query Service

   3 By sending electronic mail to the address:

   7 you can access the campus X.500 Directory.  The Directory contains
   8 information about all faculty, staff, and students of the University,
   9 including phone numbers, mailing addresses, job titles, email
  10 addresses, and more.

  12 To query the service, send a piece of email to this address with a
  13 command similar to:

  15         find <name>

  17         e.g. find robert jones
  18
  19 somewhere in the Subject: field or anywhere in the body (text) of the
  20 message.  You will receive a reply that contains information about the
  21 target of your query (in the above example, you would get information
  22 on all "robert jones" who are at the University).  The <name> can be
  23 a person's full name, last name, or uniqname.  An search for exact
  24 matches is first tried; if there are no exact matches, an approximate
  25 search (using soundex rules) is done.

  27 If your query matches exactly one person, you will receive detailed
  28 information about that person.  If more than one is matched, a list will
  29 be returned that should hopefully provide you with enough information
  30 to be able to determine which individual you really want.  Another
  31 query can then be made to obtain the detailed information.

  33 This service understands a number of synonyms for the "find" command,
  34 including: "whois", "search", "look up", "show."  You can also send
  35 a message with the word "help" in it to get this text returned to you.

  37 Note that this service is entirely automated -- no humans will respond
  38 to requests or other email sent here.
